Meet the Adventurer!
Welcome! I’m {Insert Name}, adventurer, educator, and nature-lover.
After graduating college, I was lucky enough to get a job that took me all over the United States and Canada, and I have been passionate about traveling and meeting new people ever since! I love the challenge of budgeting a trip, researching locations, and then immersing myself into a new culture in a new location.
Welcome to Ostatus!
I created Ostatus in hopes to encourage and help other travelers take that first step in discovering themselves. Traveling is such a unique experience in the fact that it opens your eyes to other cultures and creates an open mind to people that are different from yourself.
Here at Ostatus, I hope to share budgeting tips for the everyday traveler, personal experiences from my own travels, and encouragement for you to start your own journey.
Lao Tzu, a Chinese philosopher, once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” I hope I can help you take your first step in traveling and exploring the United States and the world!
Many Years of Travel
I had my first taste of travel in college. My friend invited me to go to Prague in the Czech Republic. I had never heard of the country at the time being from a small town, but was eager to get out and explore. I booked my first flight ever that Christmas and was off on my very first adventure during Spring Break! It was during this trip that I realized I wanted to see as much as the world as possible!
After college I got a job that had me teaching and traveling somewhere new almost every month. I was able to explore cities in over forty states in the U.S. I have surfed on the coast of Maine, hiked the mountains of Colorado, and explored the many breath taking views of California by motorcycle. I can tell you some of the best places to visit on both coast of the United States and many places in between.
Why Choose a Life of Travel?
The famous American writer Mark Twain said it spot on when he said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” One doesn’t have to travel internationally to learn about themselves and other people. America is huge and there is so much to see in our own backyard!
Traveling taught me about people that are different from me, educated me in geography, and allowed me to hear other people’s stories and upbringing. Traveling makes one appreciate where they came from and the people they are surrounded by. I hope after viewing Ostatus, you will be encouraged to start your own journey of self-discovery through traveling!
How do I afford traveling?
Traveling can be as expensive or as inexpensive as you want. People have a misconception that only the rich can afford to travel, but that is not true.
Every month I put a little bit aside for traveling. If I know that in three months I want to take a weekend trip that will cost me $600, I put $200 aside each month up until my trip. I have also gone to such an extreme as getting a roommate to help me pay for some bills and rent and can therefore use that extra money to travel on longer trips.
As I have gotten older and built my credit, I have also started opening credit cards that give travel points. One must be careful with this though, because if you don’t pay off the card each month, those charges add up!
Lastly, I look for deals! There are so many websites out there that offer discounted trips from airports all around the United States.
My Favorite Places Across the United States
There are so many great and unique places across the United States to visit. If you like original adventures, I suggest Seattle, Washington. Here you will find tours of Underground Seattle, which has you walking near ruins of storefronts and walkways that were buried after the fire of 1889.
If you want a bit of a bigger city with more history you can adventure to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Here you can get your culture on at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, educate yourself on history by visiting the Liberty Bell, or explore the haunting old Eastern State Penitentiary.
If you want more of a relaxing vacation you can head to the New England area of the United States. Here you can visit the coast of Portland, Maine and eat their famous lobster rolls, or visit the original Ben and Jerry’s ice cream factory in the mountains of Vermont. This is the perfect place to go to in the Fall when the leaves are changing colors.
If you are more into the hustle and bustle of bigger cities, I highly recommend New York City. NYC is such a diverse city with so much culture at your finger tips. Walk through Chinatown to get the feeling of visiting Shanghai, pass through mid-town and visit Time Square to grab your ticket to Broadway, or if you want some more peace and quiet head on over to Central Park where you will see many famous spots that have been in movies and TV shows.
If you are more of a nature-lover, the Appalachian mountains that start in Georgia and run up the East Coast are beautiful. Charlottesville, Virginia or Ashville, North Carolina are both perfect cities to stay. In both locations you can hike to waterfalls during the day, and then explore the shops and restaurants of each city at night.
These are so many places to explore no matter what type of adventure you are looking for.
Ostatus Goal
I hope this website helps you reach your travel goals by giving you the tools you need to seek adventure and the resources to take that leap.
